Jury deliberations into the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial began on Friday, May 27, 2022. Judge Penney Azcarate said that the jury had come to a verdict on the case. Johnny Depp proved all three counts which challenged if Heard’s statements were in actual malice in regards to an essay that didn’t actually mention him by name but definitively referred to him.
Johnny Depp WINS Defamation Case Against Amber Heard with All Three Counts – Depp Awarded Over $10 MILLION, Heard Picks Up $2 MIL
The bare brief of this trial is that Amber Heard made a number of allegations against ex-husband Johnny Depp’s behavior during their marriage in a 2018 essay in The Washington Post. Depp would sue for $50 million in damages and a long, meandering trial would see a number of disturbing things claimed by Heard and Depp’s name dragged through the gutter.
However, the general view is that she is lying about Johnny Depp and it doesn’t help that the media has pushed the narrative that Heard should be believed because of the severity and number of claims. The jury would find that Heard’s statements in The Washington Post were defamatory and in actual malice against Johnny Depp.
Seriously, the jury wasn’t having it with Heard’s testimony at all and he totally cleared all three counts on that end.
He was awarded $10 million with an additional $5 million in punitive damages. However, since damages are capped in Virginia, he would get $350,000 for a total of $10,350,000. While she took a shellacking as far as her statements being defamatory, Amber Heard would win one count in her counterclaim and be awarded $2 million. This was way lower than the $100 million in her countersuit.
Heard was in court for the verdict while Depp is in the UK playing with Jeff Beck. So, it seems like the Depp team pretty much knew this was going to be a slam dunk given the climate towards Amber Heard and how effective they were against Heard’s case.
The expectation is that the two of them will negotiate on the amounts to be paid and given the amount Depp was awarded—we’ll just have to see what Heard’s side will bring to the table.
After the outcome came out, Amber Heard skedaddled from the courthouse and would post on Twitter just moments later:
