Christian Musician Nicole Serrano Comes Out After A Pastor ‘Tried To Pray The Gay Away’
The singer-songwriter’s decision has certainly turned a few heads, given that she is from a conservative background.
The star has worked with some of the biggest names in the Christian music industry, and yet, it seems that Nicole always had doubts over her sexuality.
So much so that she did not fit in as a child, as she admitted that her feelings were not reconcilable with her upbringing. In an interview with People magazine, she said: “I felt tormented. I wanted so bad to be a good kid, you know.”
And things did not get any easier due to the reaction that Nicole had received from her family. She admitted that she first felt she may have been gay when she watched the film ‘The Little Mermaid.’
Thereafter, she stated how she found the character Ariel ‘cute.’ So when she made the decision to tell her mother, when she was just 11, that did not go down very well.
She added: “I went to a church that told us that homosexuality was a sin.. [The pastor] ‘prayed over me and basically tried to pray the gay away.”
So in a final attempt to see if this was a phase, Nicole even admitted to dating men in college. But as she did so, it became evidently clear to her that she was not attracted to the opposite sex.
That is why she decided to focus on herself until she reached a point where she was comfortable with herself. And now that she has done so, she could not be any happier.
Her following comments confirmed as much: “I eventually accepted myself, but it took a very long time. It’s been a long road filled with a lot of processing and a lot of religious trauma. But here I am.”
