Disgraced South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh and an accomplice were indicted on drug charges on June 28, 2022. Murdaugh and Curtis Smith were both smacked with two counts of conspiracy with one if the charges involving oxy. Smith also received charges of forgery, money laundering, and more drug trafficking charges in addition to other charges including suicide for hire.
South Carolina Lawyer and Accomplice Indicted on Drug Trafficking Charges – Alex Murdaugh Held on $7 MILLION BAIL for 74 Counts
The indictment was issued accused Murdaugh and Smith of “the acquisition and distribution of illegally obtain led narcotics.” Not only did they sell drugs in Colleton County where the indictment was read but in multiple counties. The duo along with others allegedly conspired to buy and sale oxycodone for a lengthy period between October 2013 and September 2021.
Between October 2017 and February 2021, the two engaged in money laundering as Murdaugh allegedly gave Smith 437 checks that were below the $10,000 amount to avoid reporting. In total, Smith is said to have received $2,413,754.
Their oxy enterprises fell after Alex Murdaugh was arrested for allegedly stealing $4.3 million from his housekeeper’s estate. Gloria Satterfield died in a fall on his property in February 2018. Instead of her family getting her estate, Murdaugh is said to have pocketed the cash himself. Police plan to exhume Satterfield’s remains to check for wrongdoing in light of recent events.
When he was arrested, he was undergoing rehab treatment. In September 2021, he was booted from the family’s law office for misappropriating funds. Murdaugh would initiate a suicide-for-hire plot where distance cousin Curtis Smith would shoot him in the head. This would allow his surviving son to receive his $10 million life insurance policy.
As a result Murdaugh received insurance fraud charges. It was also revealed that not only had be been stealing money from clients but also from his former law firm. In total, Alex Murdaugh is looking at 74 counts. He is being held on $7 million bail while Curtis Smith is being held on $250,000 bail.
