Tragedy struck during the 2022 Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, Illinois as 21-year-old Robert Crimo III opened fire on citizens from a downtown rooftop. As the police investigation into the shooting developed, we found out that Crimo disguised himself in women’s clothing and fired over 70 rounds with what was described as an “AR-15 style rifle” which was purchased legally.
Highland Park Shooter Robert Crimo III Planned the Shooting Out for Weeks – No Motive in Tragedy That Claimed 7 Lives and Injured Over 30
Crimo managed to blend into the panic-stricken crowd, fled the scene after dropping his weapon, and headed to his mother’s home. Lake County Sheriff Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said that Robert Crimo would get his mother’s car but was eventually pulled over by police and arrested.
The investigation has found no indication that Crimo’s mother knew about the attack or her son’s plans. To further drive this home, Covelli said:
“There are no indications there was anyone else involved in this attack. By all indications, it appears Crimo was acting by himself.”
As far as a motive for the act of violence, Covelli said “At this point, we have not developed a motive for him.” With that said, Covelli has said that they managed to get something out of him but nothing that can be spoken on at the moment.

Covelli would answer a question about whether Highland Park’s Jewish community was the target stating that the attack seems to have been random and that the investigation turned up nothing that points to Crimo targeting any particular group.
Again, that goes into no motive being found at the moment. As mentioned before, the gun used in the attack was legally purchased in Chicago which is how law enforcement was able to trace it directly to Robert Crimo. The police would find other legally purchased guns—pistols—at the shooter’s home in Highwood.
Currently, the investigation is ongoing and perhaps after reviewing the videos that Crimo posted online, a motive may develop. Deputy Chief Covelli said this about charges against Crimo:
“Investigators are still developing leads and very critical information, once we’re at a point where we’re ready to review all that information for charges, we’ll sit down with the state’s attorney and review for criminal charges.”
