Amber Heard wants her Insurance Company in California to cover part of the money she owes Depp in damages. However, it seems like they are not willing to.
In the just-concluded trial against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, the court asked the actress to pay $8.3 million to Depp in damages since the verdict given was in his favor. It is clear to the public that Heard can’t pay the whole sum to Depp, and she has been seen on a number of occasions making financial choices that she didn’t make before the trial.
Amber Heard’s Insurance Company Might Not Cover Damages She Owes Her Ex-husband, Johnny Depp
Also recently, Amber’s lawyer—Elaine Charlson Bredehoft— revealed during a Thursday episode of the Today show that her client could “absolutely” not pay Depp. The total sum Depp was awarded was $15 million, $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive costs. Heard, on the other hand, was awarded $2 million because Depp had defamed her through an attorney. Elaine’s statement has confirmed what a source told The New York Post that the Aquaman actress was “broke” due to legal fees she had to pay for the trial and her expensive lifestyle.
Heard has since been looking for ways to pay Depp and also ways to avoid paying altogether. The mother-of-one had a $1 million liability policy with an insurance company, which is supposed to cover wrongful conduct, and that includes defamation. However, California law that governs insurance policies allows for an exception if the wrongful conduct was “willful.”
The company then claims that they do not have to provide coverage for Heard’s case and is waiting for a declaration from the judge to that effect. It looks like Amber is running out of options here. The question is what will happen if Depp’s ex-wife can’t pay up? Steven Emmert, a Virginia-based lawyer, told The New York Post that Depp might have to collect her wages from her upcoming movies—Run Away With Me and In The Fire—or else seize her three-bedroom, three-bathroom home in California.
Now, in order to prevent that from happening, it seems Heard and her legal team have found a workaround. On Friday, her team of lawyers demanded a new trial based on their claim that the person that showed up as “Juror 15” during the trial was a different person than the person who should have shown up. A lot of people are anxious about how this will turn out for the former couple.
