It’s June 1999 which means that it’s time for WCW Great American Bash 1999. This show took place in Baltimore, MD and drew just under 11,680 fans for Kevin Nash defending his WCW World title against Randy Savage. The show is also significant for being the PPV debut of the final WCW logo. Yeah, that one.
The Best
The No Limit Soldiers team of Konnan and Rey Mysterio faced off against the West Texas Rednecks team of Curt Hennig and Bobby Duncum Jr in a really entertaining, solid match. I really rocked with this match. On its own, it’s good but following some lemons, this was really damn good.
While it was an odd time for WCW as a whole—and No Limit didn’t make it less odd—fun matches like this and our next entry shine on bad and mediocre PPVs. Speaking of our next entry, the semi-main event saw the team of Chris Benoit & Saturn take on the JERSEY TRIAD team of DDP and Kanyon.
I love this match, it’s well-paced, you’ve got four iron horses who can go and will try some new stuff in the ring, they’re all good when the fists start flying, and they can throw down in a straight-up tandem battle—and they did all of that!
If this had been the main event, I would not complain but the sauce on both sides of the ring wasn’t there to where it could be placed as the main. Make no mistake, this was a main event caliber match.
No, f**k that, this had the sauce to be the main event. There are even stakes in the form of the World Tag Team titles so this was above a really good exhibition with no stakes to be seen.
The Rest
The opener saw Hardcore Hak take on Brian Knobbs in another overly physical Knobbs clubberin’ fest. Hak is with this kind of action but he’s just kind of going through the match since this WCW hardcore: just hit each other with weapons, beat on each other, and end with a big to-do—only without the involvement or interest of the crowd.
I can’t say that Mickey Whipwreck taking on Van Hammer was a bad match. It was a lengthier squash where Whipwreck made Hammer look decent. However, like the opener, this could’ve been on a pre-show or one of the B-shows. This wasn’t something you’d put on PPV.
I will say that like the opener if it had to be on PPV, it shouldn’t be in the opening couple of minutes of the show without some better matches around it.
I’m going to say that Buff vs. Disco wasn’t bad at all. Actually, it was better than expected. They got a little too much room to groove and it made for an uninteresting match that could’ve been on TV but it wasn’t sloppy, there was awkwardness from anyone missing their spot or cue or anything.
Bagwell vs. Disco was a basic match that just wasn’t interesting enough to warrant 10 minutes. If anything, I expected more of what made them interesting to watch in interviews and angles in this match—their charisma.
Ernest Miller vs. Horace Hogan? Ehh…let’s give that a hard skipperooni. I mean, it was brief at just over five minutes but skip that sh**. Also, enough with Flair vs. Piper in the 90s—a slightly less disgusted skipperooni for this one.
What was Sting vs. Rick Steiner? It meandered for the most part then “Sting” gets attacked by dogs with assistance from Scott Steiner and Tank Abbott and the referee has to stop the thing to save Sting. If you’re stoned and watch this, it might be entertaining in a humorous way—it was—but then I rewatched it. This is a match where if you had a dream about it, someone just woke you up, and you’re trying to explain it, nothing would make sense.
The main event saw Kevin Nash defend his WCW World title against Randy Savage in a sorry-ass match. This was not good. It was way too slow to end the show after a mostly sorry card. I will say that the bright point of this match is that it was just 8 minutes…which means that yes, it could’ve just been on TV.
WCW Great American Bash 1999 Verdict: Bronze Medal (4.5/10)
This was a two-match show and most of “The Rest” wasn’t really worth watching. Great American Bash 1999 was not it, folks. The match of the show goes to Benoit & Saturn taking on the JERSEY TRIAD.
