Ryback Fighting WWE Over The Trademark To His Name

WWE fans will fondly remember Ryback if they were watching around 2012. The former powerhouse of The Nexus broke out on his own, and was getting great responses from fans. He would leave the company in 2016, and make his way onto the independent circuit. He would take great lengths to secure the trademark of Ryback, even going as far to legally change his name from Ryan Allen Reeves to Ryback Allen Reeves. This didn’t stop WWE, who disputed his claim for the trademark of Ryback earlier this year.

A Very Petty Move From WWE

WWE has no intention to use the Ryback brand going forward. They aren’t producing new merchandise, he isn’t making it into the 2K games, and they certainly aren’t reusing the character. This is simply an example of WWE being petty bastards and trying to screw over a disgruntled former employee who tried to keep the brand and idea he created for himself during his time in WWE.

Ryback Just Wants To Be Erased From WWE

The frustration in the situation has lead to Ryback taking to Twitter in a public statement towards WWE. “Publicly asking @wwe, @VinceMcMahon, @TripleH to let the Ryback trademark go. It wasn’t created by them and trying to make someone spend nearly 200K to keep their legal name and brand is petty and unnecessary. Please move on and erase me from your history and programming.” In a later tweet he also clarified the following “I don’t want my brand associated with their brand in any way, it’s a bad look with where they’re heading.”

The only person to be completely wiped from the WWE history books is Chris Benoit for very obvious reasons. I can’t see this tweet affecting his situation very much, it more just serving as an outlet for his frustration. He can just hope that he is able to build up enough support to have WWE release the trademark, and stop wasting money on being petty. WWE has bigger fish to try, especially given they just lost two of their presidents. The best guess on why WWE is holding onto the trademark is they don’t want Ryback signing with AEW and bringing the moniker to rival programming.

Do you think WWE should release the Ryback trademark? Should Ryback give up and create a new brand which WWE will never be able to touch? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
