Actor John Leguizamo has slammed the decision to cast James Franco as former Cuban leader Fidel Castro in ‘Alina of Cuba.’
John Leguizamo BASHES Hollywood For Cultural Appropriation By Casting Disgraced Actor James Franco As Fidel Castro-‘Boycott! This F’d up!’
John’s comments were in relation to casting an actor, who was clearly not of Cuban origin. Therefore, the decision to go with a white-American actor to play a completely opposite role did not go down well with him.
And in the process of doing so, he bashed Hollywood with accusations of cultural appropriation. In his comments, he said: “How is this still going on? How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well?
“No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers!” But rather than simply have a tirade, John came up with a radical solution to prevent this once and for all.
He urged his supporters to not put any support behind this movie by taking the decision to boycott it. And yet, this approach could end up backfiring for the following reasons.
First of all, the controversy could attract more people to watch it. And in doing so, perhaps lead to the box office numbers increasing.
Secondly, his criticism could inadvertently be seen as an attack on Franco. After all, the latter has not been too far from controversy himself.
He only recently settled outside of court in a lawsuit involving some of his students, who alleged they were pushed to do explicit sex scenes on camera in his acting classes.
And yet, Leguizamo doubled down on his beliefs. His following comments confirmed as much: “Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement which would b wrong!
“I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!” The fans on social media were quite hostile towards Franco. And in doing so, they made their intentions very clear.
One person wrote: “And I guess everyone has forgiven him for sexual assault?? I haven’t forgotten and I will BOYCOTT everything HE does!!”
