Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland will finally defend the AEW World Tag Team Championships tonight, but Keith Lee might well be able to handle things on his own. That’s due to their challengers being Private Party, who Lee single handidly tore apart during his AEW Debut. However tonight, Marq Quen & Isiah Kassidy look to prove their critics wrong here tonight – and recapture their early AEW successes, and remind fans that they can beat the likes of The Young Bucks on the right night.
Claudio Castagnoli Gives Dustin Rhodes A Chance To Be World Champion
Before this match would begin, we’d hear from the Ring of Honor World Champion – Claudio Castagnoli, who had the Pure Champion by his side in Wheeler Yuta. He’d greet Ricky Steamboat on his way to the ring – and was glad to greet the fans as champion, and even glader to be in the same space as Steamboat.
He does feel weird standing in street clothes, wishing he was in his gear and defending that belt. Next week – anyone can get a shot at the ROH World Championship, and Dustin Rhodes was the one to step up. For 34 years, Rhodes has dreamed of being a World Champion, and that could change with this open challenge, and he promises everyone will see the best Dustin Rhodes in history.
Castagnoli knows the fire that burns in Rhodes, the fire that is being told that you should have been World Champion. If Rhodes promises to bring his A-Game, Castagnoli gladly accepts this challenge. We have a massive match for Rampage next week – and could be a defining moment of the career of Rhodes.
Swerve In Our Glory Make First Successful Title Defense
Lee would try to kick things off with the Biel, but Kassidy landed on his feet – before being crushed with the double handed chop. Swerve would get the tag, as Kassidy was cornered for the running elbow smash. The diving uppercut would be caught in the sky, before Quen would dive in to try and help Kassidy escape a suplex.
Swerve would be sent to the floor, and nailed with the Tornillo from Kassidy. Private Party would look to isolate Swerve in their corner. Keeping Lee out of the ring is their best chance, but Swerve blocked Gin & Juice to make the tag. Lee would throw Quen & Kassidy around the ring with the greatest of ease, before wiping Kassidy out with a huge lariat for a two count.
Lee would be nailed with the pounce, before Swerve would nail the House Call kick for a near fall. JML Driver however, few men can kick out of that. Still AEW World Tag Team Champions – Swerve In Our Glory!
