Last year we saw something rare for wrestling, a company besides WWE running a show out of the historic Madison Square Garden in New York. A joint show between NJPW and Ring Of Honor sold the venue out during last years Wrestlemania weekend.
While the ROH side of the equation was a mess, NJPW delivered all the highlights on a card which was topped by Kazuchika Okada winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Jay White. Because of the success of this event, there have reportedly been talks to run another show this summer.
Expect A Lot Of New Japan In America Over The Summer
While normally the summer is home to the grueling G1 Climax tournament for NJPW, things are different this year. This is because the 2020 Summer Olympics are coming from Japan, and that has taken over most major arenas that NJPW would use for their tournament.
Because of this, the G1 has been moved back to the fall. With the expansion plans of New Japan Pro Wrestling Of America in full effect, those summer months could be a great time to do a star filled tour of the United States, with it all capping off at the event in Madison Square Garden.
Will NJPW Be Able To Sell Out MSG Without Ring Of Honor?
While Ring Of Honor could have involvement in the show due to their lasting partnership with NJPW, the biggest draws last time around were all from the Japanese side of the card. Because of this, there should be very little issue on them selling tickets with proper advertisement and good matches being built.
The NJPW roster is stacked with an insane amount of talent, so building a huge main event wouldn’t be hard. Even something like Tetsuya Naito vs. Will Ospreay for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship would be a huge match that fans would come in droves to see, and that is just one of many possible matches. They also have stars like Jon Moxley & Chris Jericho who are members of the roster, and are massive names in North America as well.
Would you want to see NJPW run Madison Square Garden once again? What should be the main event match if they do go ahead with these plans? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
