Chris Jericho is never comes up short when it comes to having something to say, and following Triple H’s recent interview with Areil Helwani leading up to Clash at the Castle, he really dug in.
It’s to be expected and this is one of the fun parts about having so many wrestling companies around. We get to see their product in the ring and enjoy their bantering back and forth, though AEW has been far more vocal since day one.
Chris Jericho Fired Back at Triple H for “Changing the Narrative” Over AEW-WWE Wednesday Night War
As a new company in 2019, AEW never missed a chance to take a shot at the WWE and it continues to this day with various ebbs and flows depending on how much they’re trying to get fans’ attention.
Taking his shot
The Wednesday Night War lasted two years and was between AEW Dynamite (their top show) and NXT (WWE’s third and developmental brand).
At the time, we thought it was interesting Vince McMahon would attempt to put a show across from a competitor following his angst and griping about WCW doing it, but there are arguments it was always the plan.
But that’s a discussion for another time.
By the end of the two year war, AEW won a vast majority of the ratings and it was believed Vince wiped the NXT slate clean as a punishment for failure, but NXT was considered the top WWE brand by many fans and critics.
The fact Vince wanted to make it a true developmental brand instead of what it had grown into hints at another reason for destroying what Triple H built, but that’s another discussion as well.
But they all play into some of Triple H’s comments as he explained he doesn’t watch AEW but is aware of what everyone’s doing, but it’s about focusing on their own product.
In a bit of gamesmanship, during his interview Triple H congratulated them while also taking a swipe at AEW:
“People put so much pressure on all this competitive war, but it never was that. They beat our developmental system. Good for them.
“It was never that. Here was never even a pressure of ‘you have to beat that.’
“It was put on the best product we could. It shifted over time. During the pandemic, it shifted over time.”
Taking the bait
Of course, as AEW’s unofficial attack dog, Jericho couldn’t help in firing back when he sat down for an interview with Inside the Ropes.
He accused Triple H of changing the narrative while citing what Triple H and other said previously.
“Once again it is just changing the narrative and changing the history, which makes me laugh. Because when it started, it was not developmental, it was a third brand, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and all the other bullsh– that they said, so of course we beat the developmental or whatever you want to call it, but who gives a sh–?
“It’s such old news, and the show sucks, NXT sucks, it’s not a good show, and they know it. Whether they were punished or not, they probably were punished. That’s probably why Triple H said those things because he is angry that we beat them, and he is probably angry that we exist. But you know, we don’t care about WWE, we care about our show, we care about putting on the best stories that we can put on, we care about building our fanbase and building our ratings.
“We will continue to exist and I will tell you this, my boss has a lot more money than his boss does. A lot more. So you want to go to that and, we are not going anywhere, we will continue to grow. That pisses them off and why wouldn’t it? They had a monopoly for so long and don’t like the fact that we exist and that’s fine. We don’t care that they exist, God bless them. They are running a show in front of 50,000 people, why would he care about us? But you know, he should, and he does, and that’s why he said those things.”
Few things are more fun than trash talking and it’s impossible to take any of these jabs seriously, but that’s the intent. At the end of the day it’s about entertaining wrestling fans and having other wrestling companies around adds so much spice.
