The Labor Department dropped the hammer on a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise in Pennsylvania for violating child labor laws and allowing teens to work longer hours and later shifts.
The Labor Department Fines Pennsylvania Dunkin’ Donuts Franchisee Over $24,000 for Violating Child Labor Laws
Franchisee Akshar Ashish LLC owns three stores in Hershey, Hummelstown, and Palmyra. It is at these locations that the Labor Department says that the franchisee violated child labor laws.
In its investigation, the Department found that 14 and 15-year-old employees were allowed to work more than three hours on school days. Also, the franchisee allowed teens to work past 7 PM on a school night. It was found that some worked more than 18 hours a week.
Overall, the investigation turned up 39 teens under the age of 16 who worked more than eight hours on school holidays, weekends, and during the summer break.
Findings also noted that these teens were allowed to work past 9 PM during the break.
In total, Akshar Ashish LLC was hit with a $24,332 fine, is expected to have mandatory child labor training with managers at its stores, and those under 16 are to be issued different colored name tags that identify them as underaged employees.
The company will also be tasked with giving underaged teens child labor reading material. This condition allows those under 16 to know what they’re legally allowed to work.
Overall, the conditions allow Akshar Ashish LLC to keep within the Fair Standards Act and cover itself in case this becomes an issue in the future. The company has already paid the fine and has started taking the steps mentioned above.
