In Norwich, Connecticut, a drug trafficker was hit with 60 months for weapon possession while moving over 600 bags of fentanyl. It’s always fentanyl. James Baker (37) was sentenced on September 27, 2022 but the incident goes back to over a year earlier.
Connecticut Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for 2021 Arrest Involving Over 600 Bags of Fentanyl
On February 3, 2021, the Norwich PD stopped Baker for a vehicle violation but they got something much bigger. He was found with a loaded pistol in the car along with the 600-plus bags of fentanyl. Baker pleaded guilty in late June 2022 and faced a maximum of life behind bars.
Again, this was 600 bags and he had a gun on him, so something lengthy was very possible. He managed to get the minimum sentence despite prior convictions in the state on drug charges, assault, burglary, and an interstate offense where he moved weapons and ammo across state lines.
Since these charges would instantly put him in the “No, you can’t own or carry a gun” column, getting caught with a gun while moving drugs was going to be quite the problem for his legal team. Pleading guilty resulted in the best possible outcome here.
Prior to pleading guilty James Baker had been held since his February 2021 arrest. In addition to the five years for “possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime” he was also hit with four years of supervised release.
