A Florida man was arrested by authorities in Clearwater after beating a cyclist to death with a tire iron. Jermaine Bennett (26) was caught after his car was matched to the car seen at the crime scene on October 21, 2022.

According to authorities, the murder of Jeffrey Chapman was a random situation. After killing Chapman, Bennett reportedly went to his job at Insight Family Eye Care. Deputy Chief Michael Walek said of the murder:
“I want to make it clear that this was a totally random act. The victim was not targeted. It was a chance encounter that turned deadly while the victim was simply trying to ride his bike home.”
It appears that this wasn’t the only attack of this nature in the county as there was another victim in St. Petersburg. That victim survived and authorities are looking into the case as well as the murder in Clearwater to see if there is any connection.
On that note, the Clearwater PD is also looking for a second suspect who is described as being a slenderly-built man standing between 6 feet and 6’2.
Jermaine Bennett is currently behind bars and faces a charge of first-degree murder. His accomplice will be charged based on his involvement.
