Former One Direction star Zayn Malik has written an open letter to the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to advocate free school meals.
Former One Direction Star Zayn Malik Begs British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak To Feed Poor Children With Free School Meals
The cost of living crisis has driven families further into poverty with a significant number of people struggling to make ends meet.
And as Zayn benefitted from having free school meals during his time growing up, he wanted to see that policy being reciprocated towards others.
Malik had the experience of growing up in Bradford which has been plagued by its own issues with deprivation. With that being said, Malik urged the prime minister to take action.
In his comments, he said: “I know what that shame feels like, I have seen it first hand, I personally experienced the stigma surrounding food insecurity.
“My hope is that in writing this letter we can all ensure that no child ever has to experience this hunger and stigma again.”
Although Zayn may not have the financial worries that other people have to contend with, he does understand the challenges of being a single parent. He split up from the mother of his daughter, Khai, Gigi Hadid in 2021 as the pair continue to co-parent.
And it was that first-hand experience that reinforced his belief that children needed the best possible start in life. After all, Zayn managed to benefit from this policy by going on to become one of the biggest pop stars in the world.
He added: “Free School Meals are such a big help for the poorest children in our society and they guarantee a reliably hot, nutritious lunch every day at school, so children can thrive rather than worrying.”
The fans on social media had a lot to say about the matter. A significant proportion of them praised Zayn for using his voice in a positive manner.
One person wrote: “Thank u @zaynmalik for using ur fame for backing a good cause. So proud of u.” Time will tell if this has a positive impact.
