Surprisingly, some drug ring is running the railcar gambit back to back as CBP officers in Calexico, California discovered a second attempt at running meth into the U.S.
Calexico Port of Entry CBP Seize 138 POUNDS in Meth as Smugglers Go For a SECOND Try at Moving Drugs into the U.S – Estimated at Almost $166K
The second seizure occurred on November 2, 2022 at 6AM. This wasn’t even a case of officers stumbling upon the stash of meth as the NII system—non-intrusive inspection—hinted at something odd in one of the railcars. At that point, the canine unit was deployed and picked up drugs being onboard.
Since CBP officers just dealt with a similar case on October 31, finding the drugs probably didn’t take that long and chances are that the officers knew exactly what to expect. Once seized, the meth weighed in at 138.18 pounds with a street value of $165,816.
The drugs were seized by the U.S Customs and Border Protection agency and brings the total amount nabbed on October 31 and November 2 to $583,272 on the street.
If anything, it’s a new or rarely used approach by drug traffickers as the loaded car or truck approach has a high chance of failure along with handing U.S authorities a potential snitch.
Director of Field Operations for the San Diego Field Office, Jennifer De La O said of the seizures:
“Using natural compartments on railcars is only one of the methods used by transnational criminal organizations to evade detection. Our CBP officers work hard every day to intercept contraband which shows their commitment and vigilance to the CBP mission.”
