In Pima County, Arizona, a man was arrested for shooting and killing his mother on November 6, 2022. Deputies with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office arrived at their residence on West Nighthawk responding to a call from the victim’s son and murderer.
Arizona Man Charged with First-Degree Murder After Shooting Mother Because “She Deserved It”
Jonathan Hatmaker (37) was reported to have called 911 about the shooting saying, “I killed my mom and she deserved it.” When asked why she deserved to be shot, Hatmaker said “She gave birth to me.”
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Hatmaker standing in the front door with a pistol in hand. He reportedly when peacefully but the scene inside was anything but peaceful as 66-year-old Peggy Hatmaker was found deceased with multiple gunshots.
During a medical examination, it was determined that the only shot to her head—underneath her chin—was the shot that killed her. Jonathan Hatmaker is reported to have a history of mental illness although previous incidents weren’t detailed.
Hatmaker currently sits in the Pima County Jail on a first-degree murder charge and $1 million bail. According to KOLD-TV, this incident marks the fourth time that a child killed their parent just within Pima County and in just over a month.
