On November 13, 2022, a joint task force between the Australian Federal Police’s Australian Border Force and Hong Kong Customs and Excise intercepted 1.8 tons of liquid meth. The bust has a street value of A$1.6 billion—or $1 billion.
Australian and Hong Kong Authorities Seize 1.8 TONS of Liquid Meth Valued at $1 BILLION in Hong Kong
The bust has been described as “record breaking” as the drugs were heading to New South Wales, Australia from Hong Kong. It would be the HKCE who found the meth hidden in coconut water cartons on October 23, 2022. A statement from the AFP also included the contributions of its officers in Mexico:
“Mexican-based officers used their international network to alert AFP officers in Hong Kong about the suspicious consignment being shipped from Mexico to Australia via Hong Kong.”
The AFP noted that the 1.8 tons could’ve been distributed as 18 million sales on the street. Not only that but the drugs could’ve also been used for smaller batch sales for dealers as large consignments are broken down.
Simply put: this is a large amount of drugs and the investigation into those involved with the trafficking of the meth. Since this means that there is a ring involved, the investigation will likely see involvement from the serious organized crime units.
