Central Bureau of Narcotics Busts Opium Ring in India – Seizes Almost 1.7 MILLION in Opium
It’s unknown how long the ring had been in operation but a tip gave authorities insight that trucks were being used to smuggle the opium throughout northeast India. The investigation into drug rings in the north is known as Operation Tulip and is based around the state of Rajasthan.
On November 15, 2022, a 22-wheeler was stopped at Rajadhok Toll Plaza on Jaipur-Agra Highway. During a search of the truck, authorities discovered 95 packages of opium with a total weight of 102.910 kg or over 226 pounds.
The seizure wasn’t without difficulty as the drivers attempt to ram through a police vehicle that was escorting it. While both vehicles were damaged in the attempted escape, an officer managed to subdue the smugglers.
Both the vehicle and the drugs were seized by the CBN while the traffickers were arrested and charged. So far, Operation Tulip has brought in six smugglers and kept hundreds of pounds of illegal narcotics out of Rajasthan so far.
