Bribery is nothing new among police and government officials in India and neither are the efforts to curb corruption. On November 22, 2022, the Central Bureau of Investigation slapped the cuffs on a tax officer based out of Mandsaur, Mashhad Pradesh in central India.
Indian Authorities Arrest Tax Officer Who Accepted Over $6.1K Bribe for Extortion
The tax officer—Ramgopal Prajapati—was named in a complaint when he demanded Rs50,000 or $6,118 or else he would slam the complainant with a big penalty from the tax office in addition to a raid. The company Ramgopal Prajapati represented made electric switches and the income tax affairs were handled by the tax office in Mandsaur.
Basically, the tax officer tried to use his office’s weight to bully the complainant into paying up. The CBI looked into the complaint and set up a trap. Prajapati was caught accepting the bribe and will go before the Special Judge overseeing Central Bureau of Investigation cases.
The fines and sentences he faces if convicted weren’t mentioned, however, an IRS officer made headlines for a 23-year-old bribery case where the officer received six years. Last year, the CBI captured a government official who accepted an Rs55,000 bribe and managed to get him sent away for five years.
