Emily Adonna, a model and entrepreneur from California, recently revealed her first-hand knowledge of the drawbacks of being attractive after being consistently told she is ‘beautiful’ since she was young.
TikTok Model Slammed For Complaining About Pretty Privilege And For Being Too Beautiful
Her remarks caused an uproar on the internet. In several posts on TikTok, Emily has alleged that she was sexually assaulted, but feels that people have not taken her seriously in the past.
Emily asserted that she had declined a business venture once since others believed she was ‘too young and attractive’, and thought she would ‘be a distraction.’
Emily also noticed that people treated her differently when she was wearing formal garments than when she was wearing relaxed attire.
In her comments, Emily said: “Pretty privilege is a thing, I’m not here to deny that, but it comes with disadvantages.
“I’ve never once been in a job where I haven’t been harassed. I’ve rarely been in social situations where I haven’t been harassed.”
And in order to take some steps to combat this, Emily expanded on how she decided to get herself a nose ring and some tattoos. This was on the grounds that these things are seen as hampering what a stereotypical view of beauty should be.
Although that may have been the case, not everybody was convinced by what she had to say. And this was reflected in the comments that followed on social media, as the responses were varied.
A certain subset of people supported what Emily had to say and backed up her comments through their own experiences.
One person wrote: “Disadvantage – everyone not taking your pain seriously because you’re pretty so ‘it’s not that bad’ and they don’t genuinely care because jealousy.”
Meanwhile, others disagreed as they were of the view that harassment applied across the board regardless of how someone may have looked.
Another person stated: “Girls who aren’t pretty by societal standards also get harassed in most social and professional situations. it’s not a pretty privilege side effect.”
