In the Laredo Sector, Border Patrol agents managed to nab a rapist with an active warrant in Laredo. The arrest occurred on December 5, 2022 when they were dealing with undocumented immigrants on a ranch just northwest of the city.
Laredo Area Border Patrol Arrest Rapist with Active Warrant Who Was Hidden Among Undocumented Immigrants
The CBP ran record checks on those in the group and eventually came upon Esdras Romero-Izara (29) of Guatemala. He had a warrant for second-degree rape and sexual abuse of a minor in Montgomery County, Maryland.
This arrest is still being investigated as there are questions about how the suspect was able to make it to Texas from Maryland as well as who—if anyone—assisted in his flight from justice. Romero-Izara was taken to the CBP’s Laredo West Station for processing.
From there, what happens to him will depend. Typically, crimes of “moral turpitude” are deportable and rape is an aggravated felony. However, the severity of the offense can result in an undocumented immigrant remaining in the U.S to face the legal system.
