December did not go as planned for Aaron Henare & Great-O-Khan, who had plans to make sure that NJPW had an all United Empire finals for World Tag League. However, they would finish in the middle of the pack – and Aussie Open would lose to Bishamon in the finals. Despite this, Great-O-Khan was able to ensure this was a month to remember, as on a trip to the UK – he would find himself winning his first World Championship.
Great-O-Khan Wins The RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship
During Revolution Pro Wrestling’s Uprising event, fans would see former RPW regular Great-O-Khan face Zak Zodiac for the RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship. The belt was originally held by Ricky Knight Junior, but it was revealed he suffered a broken wrist five months ago, and has recently undergone surgery. His brother would step in to defend on his behalf, and would fall to Great-O-Khan in a shocking result.
This is the first singles gold O-Khan has claimed in his career, but not his first gold won in RPW – having previously held the Tag Team Championships with Rampage Brown. To start his singles career holding a belt as storied as the RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship is huge for O-Khan. Previous NJPW names who have held the belt include Hiroshi Tanahashi, Minoru Suzuki, Will Ospreay, Tomohiro Ishii, Zack Sabre Jr, and Katsuyori Shibata.
The Wrestle Kingdom Card Is Already Packed With No Chance For O-Khan To Defend
While the belt has previously been defended on shows like Wrestle Kingdom, the card is already set – with O-Khan currently not booked for the event, but likely to appear in the New Japan Rambo match to decide the next King of Pro Wrestling champion. O-Khan will likely defend the belt during the New Beginning tour following Wrestle Kingdom, unless he loses the belt to Ricky Knight Junior first – with RKJ set to return to action in late January.
We can only hope O-Khan has a chance to make his reign something special, as this could be the chance he’s been looking for to show his value to NJPW as a singles champion. O-Khan spent the bulk of 2022 in the tag team division, winning the IWGP Tag Team Championships alongside Jeff Cobb twice.
