Following a wave of criticism due to the shape of a crossword published in the The New York Times resembling a swastika, the newspaper has responded.
New York Times Hits Back After The Outlet Published A Crossword Which Drew Comparisons With A Swastika
In the image here, the crossword on closer examination does appear to resemble the controversial symbol. However, it is all a question of whether this was done intentionally or if it merely turned out that way.
The outlet made it clear in no uncertain terms that there was not anything malice since this was a common way that crosswords puzzles would turn out. In a statement on behalf of the newspaper, a representative said the following: “This is a common crossword design.
“Many open grids in crosswords have a similar spiral pattern because of the rules around rotational symmetry and black squares.” Nevertheless, this did not stop the controversy from dying down.
The shape of the puzzle has provoked a response on social media, drawing the attention of many people since it was published on the opening day of Hanukkah.
Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday that is typically celebrated in the wintertime. It is referred to as the ‘festival of lights’ and is characterized by special prayers and food.
Therefore, prominent members of those in the political arena did not hold back on their condemnation for the publication. Former United States President Donald Trump bashed the paper.
After all, his daughter Ivanka Trump is married to Jared Kushner, who is a member of the Jewish faith. With that being said, Trump had a lot to say. His following comments confirmed as much: “Disgusting.
“Only the New York Times would get Hanukkah going with this is the crossword puzzle. Imagine what they would do to someone who did this and was not ideologically aligned with them.
