In Sutter County, California, deputies have made a major development in the case of a man who was zip-tied, set on fire, and had his car stolen: he falsely reported the whole thing. Going back to December 7, 2022, Aurelio Guzman-Hernandez (33) spoke with Sutter County deputies and told them he had pulled over to help a stranded woman next to an SUV.
Deputies Determine That California Man Who Reported Being Tied-Up and Set on Fire Made Up the Incident
According to Guzman-Hernandez, it was at that moment that two men stepped out of the SUV. One was reportedly armed with a knife while the other had a gun. Guzman-Hernandez said that they tied his legs with zip-ties, poured gasoline on him, and set him ablaze—before running off with his car and wallet. He told deputies that he was able to roll on the ground to put the fire out.
It’s a horrific experience to be sure but FBI Chico field office and the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office looked into the incident more. After all, an investigation is required for a violent robbery/attempted murder and there’s a survivor.
However, the sheriff’s office announced that “there was no sufficient evidence the crime occurred” after looking into it. Authorities didn’t explain what they were looking for or what was missing that brought them to this conclusion but on December 22, Aurelio Guzman-Hernandez was arrested and charged with filing a false police report.
