In an extremely bizarre and grisly case from Indiana, a man was charged with the murder of his father—who was shot and later dismembered because his son thought he was a robot. Law enforcement arrived at the home of 73-year-old Rodney Hays in response to a welfare check request on December 20, 2022.
The caller told dispatch that Shawn Hays (53) informed them that he shot his father and dismembered his body because he had apparently turned into a robot.

During the welfare check, deputies spotted the younger Hays trying to flee the residence in his truck. Deputies managed to stop him from driving off and seized a shotgun Hays had with him. They were able to talk with him and asked about his father’s well-being.
Shawn Hays said that the deceased wasn’t his father. He repeated these sentiments during a physical altercation with deputies and told them “It’s a robot that looks like a human…laying over there. I had to shoot at it to destroy it.”
According to police, Hays was active on Facebook and regularly posted about his father being a robot.
Via an investigation, detectives found that Rodney Hays was shot in the head and chest then his corpse was dismembered. Shawn Hays was charged with battery, domestic battery, pointing a loaded firearm, aggravated burglary, reckless homicide, murder, abuse of a corpse, obstruction of justice, resisting law enforcement, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
