According to a statement from the DOJ Eastern District of North Carolina, Leggett wasn’t only moving fentanyl, she was selling it in proximity of her children and allowed one of the children “to handle fentanyl.” Witness speaking to investigators are also on the record about her having assault rifles in the house and near the children.
The Lumberton PD managed to corner Leggett and her boyfriend during an October 13, 2020 traffic stop. It was noted that the couple was just leaving the drug spot they had moved operations to that month. An inspection of the vehicle turned up a handgun which was at the ready on her lap and a child in the backseat holding a bag containing fentanyl.
Search warrants executed on both the vehicle and a storage unit in the boyfriend’s name turned up $46,647 in cash, 334.98 grams of fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, and another gun which was tucked away in Leggett’s handbag.
Jania Leggett would plead guilty to conspiring to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and firearms possession in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime in April 2022. Her sentence was handed down on December 21, 2022.
