In Hong Kong, a 61-year-old butcher was killed by a pig slated for slaughter. The incident occurred on January 20, 2023 at a Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse when the worker—simply identified by his last name of “Cai”—shocked the pig with a cattle prod. The pig tackled Cai and knocked him down.

Cai was knocked unconscious from the attack and also cut himself with the knife he was preparing to use. It wasn’t mentioned how long the butcher was unconscious before being found by a co-worker. The entire time Cai was knocked out, he was also bleeding heavily from the cut.
While he would make it to a hospital and receive treatment, the 61-year-old would die as a result of his injuries. The Labor Department classified Cai’s death as a “fatal work accident”. Regardless, an investigation is underway because of the nature of the butcher’s death warrants a look at safety procedures at the slaughterhouse. The Labor Department stated:
“We will complete the investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, ascertain the liability of the duty holders and recommend improvement measures,” the Labor Department reportedly added. “We will take actions pursuant to the law if there is any violation of the work safety legislation.”
