Right now, Roman Reigns knows his next two challengers as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. Cody Rhodes earned the title shot at WrestleMania 39 by winning the 2023 Royal Rumble match, and Sami Zayn gets his shot at Elimination Chamber later this month. With the storyline between Zayn & Reigns dating back several months and being one of the best WWE has ever told, fans are more interested in Zayn vs. Reigns – and that could backfire for Rhodes at WrestleMania 39.
Mick Foley Feels Fans Could Turn On Cody Rhodes Due To Zayn vs. Reigns
On the latest edition of Pod Is Foley, the WWE Hall of Famer would chime in on the upcoming match between Sami Zayn & Roman Reigns in Montreal – and how if it’s a one-off, fans might take it out on Rhodes at WrestleMania. Foley was quoted saying the following.
“This is where the storytelling — the storytelling has been so strong. WWE has to be really careful in how they treat what they have in Sami Zayn. So if it’s a one-off, I think fans will be upset and subconsciously take that out on Cody. So I think it’s really important that Sami be treated reverently by the people in charge. Because, you know, we call him ‘The gift that keeps on giving.’ We want him to just keep on giving. You don’t want this title shot to be the peak of his storyline and then soon forgotten.”
A Triple Threat At WrestleMania Is Becoming More And More Common
With about two months before WrestleMania 39, there is a good chance that we see the match at WrestleMania once again become a triple threat. This has happened a few times over the past decade, namely when Daniel Bryan was added to the main event at WrestleMania 30 and 37, and also when Seth Rollins cashed in during the WrestleMania 31 main event.
Adding Zayn to the mix would create a much more immediately interesting match, but also increases the risk of fans turning on Rhodes if he wins the match. WWE might simply opt to have Zayn take one of the belts that Reigns has, as a way to ease the tensions of fans leading into WrestleMania.
