Prince Harry’s Invictus Games are poised to make history, as three nations are scheduled to take part in the tournament for the first time in 2023.
Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Reaches New Landmark
The Invictus Games is a global sporting event established in 2014 for those who have been wounded, hurt, or are ill in the military.
The games were designed to represent the indomitable spirit of those servicemen and women who are able to strive and succeed despite their conditions. Harry, the Duke of Sussex, created them after he paid a visit to the Warrior Games in the United States.
With that being said, Colombia, Israel and Nigeria will be participating in the event for the first time ever, as the latter becomes the first African country to do so.
Corporal Effiom Antigha, the leader of Nigeria’s team, had this to say: “I feel very happy because, before now, I didn’t think I could engage myself in any of these sporting activities.
“The Invictus Foundation has helped develop me physically and mentally. Before joining Invictus, I had never heard of sitting volleyball.”
Since 2014, the Invictus Games have been held in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. This time around the games will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany.
And given that this is a legacy that has managed to last even with Harry leaving the Royal Family in 2020, he has been left feeling overjoyed by the impact it has had.
In an official statement, the Duke of Sussex said: “These Games have shone a spotlight on the ‘unconquerable’ character of servicemen and women, their families and the ‘Invictus’ spirit.
“These Games have been about seeing guys sprinting for the finish line and then turning round to clap the last man in.” Despite this being the case, the social media response towards Harry was damning.
A certain subset of people were of the view that he was exploiting veterans, which was fuelled by claims that the funding for the games had decreased. One person wrote: “#Veteransdeservebetter than this representative. Stop taking.”
