While there are many cons to having an empty arena for wrestling events, there is one major pro. Every strike can sound absolutely brutal, with the echoes amplifying the sound. For some wrestlers, this is already the case, and one of those men is Oney Lorcan. This past episode of NXT, he lit up Shane Thorne & Brendan Vink with heavy strikes, and on 205 Live he would look to brutalize former Cruiserweight Champion Tony Nese. There was unfinished business following the NXT vs. 205 Live match two weeks back, when Lorcan eliminated Nese. Could the Premier Athlete survive the assault of Lorcan, or would Oney be back on track for another attempt at the Cruiserweight Championsip.
Tony Nese Outlasts The Assault Of Oney Lorcan
The best part of Oney Lorcan is that he treats every match like it is the main event of Wrestlemania. On this night, he faced the same expected crowd for that of Wrestlemania matches, making it even more fitting. Actions started slow, with both men feeling out the other and showing off their mat wrestling technique. Nese would grab first control with a hammerlock, only to have Lorcan slip out and attempt a dropkick. Lorcan would grab control with a headscissor, showing that he more than just a one dimensional brawler. He wouldn’t be at the same level as Nese in the technical game, and would be looking to get his heavy strikes unleashed. Nese would do everything he could to prevent this, forcing Lorcan to wrestle his match. We nearly saw a submission when Lorcan would manipulate the wrist of Nese during an armbar, but Nese survived.
The new more technical Oney Lorcan would vanish after Nese would fire him up with a shot to the gut, only to be blasted back with a chop that sounded like a shotgun blast. Things would get physical fast, as things entered familiar territory for Lorcan who could finally work his type of match. Nese would survive several chops and nail a big kick for a near fall, sending more of his own heavy strikes to Lorcan. A body slam would get a nearfall, and Nese would press the advantage with some body scissors to slow things back down. Lorcan found out with chops, and moved to a ground and pound approach. He would hit his signature running uppercuts, leaving Nese open for a running Blockbuster which got a near fall.
Lorcan would attempt his Half & Half Suplex, but it was scouted. Nese would drop the throat of Lorcan over the top rope, and follow up with a gorgeous springboard moonsault. He would punish Lorcan in the corner and attempt his running knee for the win, but Lorcan slipped away and tried again for the Half & Half Suplex. Nese countered out landing on his feet, hit a standing double stomp. Lorcan would flee to the corner, and would be hit with a spinning back elbow, German Suplex into the corner and finally the Running Nese for the finish.
Technical Matches Work Best In This Setting
As also seen on NXT with Matt Riddle & Roderick Strong, a mat based technical match works best without a crowd in attendance. While a spotfest with tons of kickouts is exciting with a crowd, it doesn’t work right now. The approach seen in this match is a recipe for greatness in the current climate. This match was an absolute gem, and one that fans of good wrestling need to seek out. Lorcan & Nese put on a clinic, and it deserves to be seen.
