There’s some speculation that Goldberg could very well be the third man in Sting and Darby Allin’s team against the Le Suzuki Gods trio of Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, and Minoru Suzuki at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023.
Could Goldberg Be the Unannounced Third Man for Sting and Darby Allin at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023?
With Forbidden Door 2023 going down on June 25, AEW didn’t have a full card for the event at the time of Dynamite. From most reports, the company just had four matches but have a full card of ten bouts. However, there is an empty spot in this match and with both Goldberg and Sting addressing retirement and the 2018 Hall of Fame inductee discussing retirement plans that were scrapped, he seems like an interesting surprise pick.
For those wondering, Goldberg expected to retire in WWE at a WrestleMania and had an agreement with Vince McMahon, according to the Hall of Famer. Those ideas were apparently torpedoed after McMahon left the company following the funny money and sexual misconduct allegations. Of course, Vince McMahon is back and involved with WWE again.
Now, Triple H is still said to be the primary creative head despite McMahon’s involvement which would make things uncertain for a retirement match. Sure, WWE would jump at it but either we’re getting a match we’ve seen in the past few years or some heroic throwaway.
The point is that this match would really depend on what else WWE has set up leading into Royal Rumble 2023 and if Goldberg’s retirement can be fit into those plans. Would the best for him to face or his personal picks have something going on in that period?
When the event goes down in days and no one in penciled into a spot for an interesting match, you kind of want a surprise participant. It’s kind of like the ECW fan expecting a surprise at a pay-per-view or super card. While he has no history with AEW, Forbidden Door 2023 would be an interesting start to a speed run.
Also, the match features two WCW alumni—one he has faced in the past and the other he wouldn’t face until they both were in WWE together. In interviews, it was revealed that Goldberg rejected matches against Chris Jericho who was running a storyline where he badgered the undefeated machine for a bout. The two would have an infamous physical altercation while in WCW which they discussed in 2022.
Do you believe Goldberg is the third man or is it all hype? Let us know in the comments!
