This past Saturday on AEW Collision, fans would be shocked when Ricky Starks & Big Bill were able to crush FTR to become the new AEW World Tag Team Champions. During the match, Cash Wheeler would be a focal point – with a reported rib injury.
Bill would chokeslam him into the announce table, before Bill & Starks crushed Dax Harwood to claim the championships. While this made many fans worry about the injury status of Cash Wheeler – things are less dire than they seemed.
Cash Wheeler Injury Is Purely Storyline Related
While speaking about the match on Wrestling Observer Radio – hosts Dave Meltzer & Bryan Alvarez would have the following exchange.
Dave Meltzer: “So the deal, I guess, is that Cash Wheeler wasn’t hurt and it’s all storyline.”
Bryan Alvarez: “He wasn’t hurt?”
Dave Meltzer: “No, it’s a storyline. It’s just it was just to put those guys over big and you know they’re going to be back in the mix and it was the match thing. I mean, the match thing was their idea for sure..”
Bryan Alvarez: “When we talked about him being injured this weekend until this exact moment right here, nobody, Dave, disputed that he was injured, which is very interesting. Now that you say that they’re not injured, I find that very interesting.”
Dave Meltzer: “No, they said that that’s all story, that there is no injury, that it was just….we’ll see. We’ll see. But it’s supposed to be a rematch. I mean, the way it was laid out, it’s like setting up a rematch when Ricky Starks and Big Bill said there’s going to be no rematch. It was to say it was basically to set up a rematch.”
It’s likely the rematch will happen at AEW Full Gear later this year – with this being the perfect stage for Starks & Bill to have a proper match with FTR over the championships. There is also a chance the rematch is saved for later this year at AEW Winter Is Coming, with The Young Bucks next in line for a title shot.
