There are few men with more charisma in wrestling today than Big E of the New Day. One of the best tag team wrestlers in WWE history, Big E is also a former NXT Champion as well as a one time WWE Intercontinental Champion. However, as he tells it on the weekly WWE program The Bump, if he had his way he would have had a much weirder gimmick than anything WWE has given him. He wanted to be a wrestling mailman, known as Mel Mann.
Big E Speaks On Mel Mann
“I fooled around with some different ideas. Mel Mann in case you didn’t know was a wrestling mailman. I don’t remember all the intricacies. But it was at a time before I got signed and so my buddies thought…you know, we’d kind of bat around ideas and we thought it would be a good idea. I got to FCW and they said ‘no, this is not a good idea’ (laughs). But my name was gonna be Mel, last name, Mann. And I was going to come out with those short like old school Postal Service shorts that were tight. You know what I mean? I had my mail bag.”
Big E would also reveal that he had names for moves for the gimmick, but with this being close to eleven years ago, he has forgotten these specific details.
Could He Have Made This Work?
This is exactly the type of thing people would now expect from Big E, with the days of him being presented as a serious top star far beyond. It would be hard to imagine Big E getting the same level of success as Mel Mann, so it is probably a good idea that officials in FCW shot this gimmick down. His charisma would have brought it some success, and fans are now wanting to see Mel Mann as part of a Halloween Special, so we could see some of his incredible vision in play.
