    MLW Anthology #5: Lucha Bros

Another week, another episode of MLW Anthology! This weekend’s episode focused on the sibling tandem of Pentagon Jr and Rey Fenix—the Lucha Bros. At this time, the duo was making waves separately in AAA. The two brothers would build their names in the U.S through Lucha Underground and PWG appearances. A regular stop for them was Major League Wrestling starting in 2018 with the company’s reboot.

    Pentagon Jr vs. Rey Fenix

On the first show of 2018, MLW Zero Hour, the Lucha Bros squared off. At this time, they weren’t paired as a tag team as Pentagon Jr was in the employ of Salina de la Renta, one of the company’s greatest managers at only 23. This match is probably the best opening bout for MLW Anthology so far. It’s fast, exciting, and at times wild. The crowd was really into this match as it delivered start to finish.

Worth noting was the commentary for the bout. Rich Bocchini and Tony Schiavone made a good team and I’m not even the biggest fan of a two-man play-by-play team. That said, they did really good on this match.

    MLW Anthology #5: Lucha Bros

After this match, their number contender bout for the MLW World Heavyweight title at MLW The World Championship Final was shown. The full match was dope and while there were stakes it doesn’t top their Major League Wrestling debut. You can catch that match on MLW Fusion #5 which is on YouTube.

MLW World Tag Team Titles: The Dirty Blondes vs. Team TBD vs. Lucha Bros

Major League Wrestling decided to crown the first tag team champions of the reboot era with a three-way anything goes match. Leading into this, Pentagon Jr failed in taking the World title from Shane Strickland, the first reboot era champion. His brother, Rey Fenix would end up joining Salina de la Renta’s Promociones Dorado.

The Dirty Blondes and Team TBD squared off twice before this showdown and were two of teams in the running for the titles. Managed by Col. Robert Parker, the Dirty Blondes was comprised of Mike Patrick and Leo Brien—two cornfed, agile bruisers. It’s as if Parker managed to find two Terry Gordys in Florida.

Team TBD was made up of the agile high-flyer Jason Cade and the talented aerialist Jimmy Yuta. Looking at this match, you realize that none of these guys are still with the promotion. At minimum I figured Dirty Blondes would’ve remained with MLW.

Early on, it was evident that the Blondes would be the first team out. While you would think they had the weight advantage, the finishing stretch probably wouldn’t have been as exciting. Once Team TBD boots the Blondes, the match gets wild.

On one hand, it’s your typical hyper-athletic spotfest but on the other, it’s such a fun spotfest that it doesn’t matter. Team TBD had the talent to really take it to Lucha Bros but they didn’t have the tools to do it. The Lucha Bros are such a well-oiled machine that they managed to hang in the match before finally scoring the pinfall and the MLW Tag Team Titles. Fans enjoyed the match so much that they threw money in the ring.

    Next Week: The Extreme Horsemen

This was a flawless episode of MLW Anthology but I hope they get back to talent who are currently with the promotion. The program serves as a good introduction to current talent but I’m loving the history episodes.

Speaking of that, Major League Wrestling will continue with tag teams and factions as next week’s episode goes into the Extreme Horsemen. Featuring Steve Corino, C.W Anderson, Simon Diamond, and Justin Credible, the faction arrived in MLW back in 2003 and served as the company’s first major faction. It could be another fun blast from the past.
