The fated day is finally here, where all the released WWE talent have their freedom to say and do as they please. Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows have made the biggest splash thus far, between their signing with Impact Wrestling for two years, working NJPW when they can, and even producing their own PPV which will air in early August. We also now know what was offered to Anderson if he didn’t sign with WWE last time, and instead chose NJPW.
Karl Anderson Was Going To Become IWGP United States Champion
While in WWE he was exclusively known as a tag team specialist, Karl Anderson is just an all around fantastic wrestler. In NJPW, he would a G1 Climax finalist, and also nearly beat Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. He was beloved by fans, and well loved backstage. Since leaving, no one has really filled his niche in the company, so it’s not surprising they wanted him back.
Before resigning with WWE, Gallows & Anderson would get offers from NJPW and the recently started AEW. With Anderson saying the following about New Japan’s offer. The storyline they had in place was as followed. Anderson was going to attack Jon Moxley at Sumo-Hall, and we were going to have a match a the Tokyo Dome. With Luke Gallows in his corner, he would have defeated Moxley and claimed his first singles championship in the company, the IWGP United States Championship. Despite clearly being the heels in this match, given the popularity of Anderson in Japan, it would have been a feel good moment for him.
Instead they resigned with WWE, and Moxley would go on to defeat Lance Archer to regain the championship after it was stripped from him. Moxley only lost the title the first time due a typhoon causing travel issues. This likely still would have happened if Gallows & Anderson resigned with NJPW, but we might have seen Anderson beat Juice Robinson, not Lance Archer.
