As WWE Raw Preview expected, and what we assume was the plan all along was Shane McMahon’s return to WWE Raw gave the episode a ratings boost and was among fans’ favorite segments of the week.
While the show itself felt like a disjointed, slapped together at the last minute mess (just like WWE Smackdown), Raw Underground has potential if they can make the fighting look real and not like they’re trying to make it look real.
It’s a difficult task, but one we think Shane McMahon is up for.
20 years in development
It’s no secret that Shane wanted to buy the UFC before Dana White did, and this may be the next step in bringing that type of realism to the WWE.
The problem he faces is, simply put, Vince McMahon. For over twenty years, Vince has gone out of his way to point out professional wrestling isn’t real and it’s entertainment. Okay, we know that.
But then when they try to bring in something like this, they and us are faced with the problem of seeing someone get hit with a dozen knees, kicks, and other head shots and keep going.
Yet, in Raw Underground, one knee knocks a person out and Shane calls the match.
While realistic and so far has limited leg slaps for the sound effects, it’s hard to accept that during a professional wrestling show we know is scripted.
Hurt Business
With MVP leading the way, the Hurt Business (Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin) took over the show at the end of the show, and Shane gave a weak “There are no rules, come back next week” type of closure.
WWE Raw Preview is curious how the Hurt Business will figure into things in the coming days or weeks since MVP declared they were taking it over last week.
We also noted that he stated he thinks the power outages are tied to Raw Underground.
While that may be incorrect (which means we’re eating crow as well they’re not), could this be MVP’s attempt to grow the Hurt Business and form his own army to take things over?
It’s a far cry from MVP just looking to represent wrestlers, and could be going a but too far character and story-wise.
We think it’s more likely that MVP will use Shane’s mock Fight Club to find new recruits, and it looks like he’ll have plenty of choices as some regulars took part last week.
It would be interesting if Raw Underground became a proving ground/developmental brand for the Hurt Business.
What do you think will happen tonight? Are you looking forward to Raw Underground?
Last week Shane McMahon debuted Raw Underground, a gritty fighting ring featuring a number of WWE Superstars and the debuting Dabba-Kato. Who will fight in the underground this week
