With the NXT Championship currently up in the air due to new champion Karrion Kross getting injured, we’re getting essentially the all-star game of NXT. Four men will enter a unique Fatal Four Way Iron Man Match, and have to go for sixty minutes. These are all former champions, and all have their case for victory.
Let’s start with Finn Balor, who is one of the greatest champions in all of NXT history, and recently came back with a new edge to his character in 2019. He might have failed to claim the NXT North American Championship, but few have actually beaten him in nearly a year.
Finn Balor Was The Longest Reigning NXT Champion For Years
Up until Adam Cole broke the record in 2020, Finn Balor was known as the longest reigning NXT Champion. At a total of 292 days, Balor achieved four defenses, before losing the championship in shocking fashion to Samoa Joe at an NXT Live Event in Massachusetts.
For a while, this reign was the definition of great, only topped in the eyes of some by that of Neville (now PAC in AEW), who reigned for 283 days, but had nine defenses. Balor was arguably a bigger champion than Neville however, with him actually defending the championship and drawing crowds outside of Full Sail University.
Balor Has Refound His Killer Instinct
Since coming back to NXT in 2019 after becoming a two time Intercontinental Champion and one time Universal Champion on the WWE Main Roster, Balor was different. He was more aggressive, more likely to bend the rules. This has given him an excellent win/loss record in 2020, with ten wins to only four losses. Two of those loses also came in triple threat matches, and his losses to Cameron Grimes & Adam Cole were due to outside interference.
Balor has been treated like an incredibly deadly threat in recent months, hasn’t lost a match clean in months, and knows what it takes to have a long reign as NXT Champion. He’s a fan favorite, and if things had worked out differently in 2020, he might currently be holding the NXT UK Championship instead of WALTER still being champion.
