Jon Moxley has been the champion since February 29, 2020 after beating Chris Jericho. He has defended his championship against a lot of top AEW wrestlers from Brody Lee, the current TNT champion to MJF, the most recent. It started to look like it could be a rematch with one of them where Jon Moxley would lose his AEW championship.
Current AEW wrestler
There’s still a new championship match between Jon Moxley and Lance Archer but it doesn’t feel like the right time to give the belt to him. No offence to Lance Archer, he’s a great wrestler but it seems like a feud with him and Brain Cage not for the AEW championship should be on the card instead.
There are two AEW wrestlers that could have a rematch for the AEW championship and could realistically beat him; Kenny Omega and Derby Allan. Kenny Omega does seem like the most likely to be thrown into the main event in the next coming months. When Kenny does fully turn Cleaner, the sky’s the limit for him.
He will most likely have a feud with Hangman Adam Page first but Kenny Omega becoming champion should definitely happen soon. Derby Allan is also a AEW wrestler who just seems to be getting better even though he’s also having a feud with Ricky Starks.
A feud between Derby and Jon again could be great and Derby being an AEW built star could be massive for him to be the first home grown AEW champion.
Someone new?
Even though there are a lot of fans that don’t like ex-WWE stars coming to AEW. There is no argument that they have pushed AEW up to one of the biggest companies in wrestling. With Chris Jerchio being the first big WWE star to jump ship.
With Cody being long gone before AEW was coming into reality. Now that Miro (Rusev) has joined the AEW roster pushing him straight to the top and in a championship shot would be great but would annoy some fans.
Nearly any of the ex-WWE stars could be put into the main event picture but it’s starting to get to the point where a fresh new star that has started in AEW and not WWE is going to be champion. This is most likely the thing that would make most fans happy. Personally, my money is on Kenny Omega.
