Jay Briscoe was set to face EC3 on this night, but due to EC3 not being able to make the event, he doesn’t have a match. Shane Taylor and S.O.S were supposed to have a match for the ROH Six Man Tag Team Championships, but it’s the same situation.
So these two heavyweights are without a match on this night, bumped into each other during the pre-show, and now we have a match that could have been a main event of Final Battle. In the past, Briscoe & Taylor met and Briscoe won, but this is a new and better Taylor. But even the best Shane Taylor can’t beat a focused Jay Briscoe, a two time ROH World Champion.
Shane Taylor Throws Some Bombs
After the handshake and some whispers, they’d take their corners and get right to grappling. Taylor shoved Briscoe off twice, and it became clear he’d need a new strategy here. Briscoe threw strikes with Taylor and that was a mistake, a back elbow stunning him and letting Taylor hit quick body shots in the corner. Taylor was put in a headlock when Briscoe got his pace, but Briscoe was shoved off and stopped with a shoulder tackle.
Briscoe was ready to throw hands with Taylor, and would just dodge the big right hand before going for a boot to the chest. Taylor grabbed the boot and dropped Briscoe with a knockout punch, Briscoe going back to pre-pandemic days after that one. On the outside now, Briscoe somehow kept fighting, even when run into the barricade. He’d make the comeback, before another big right hand dropped him.
Taylor wanted to bust the barricade, but ran into a big boot. A headbutt was followed by some uppercuts back in the ring, this one finally taking Briscoes preferred pace. Taylor took a dropkick when he tried to get moving, but a right cross dropped Briscoe again, and Taylor went for the KO with another one, but Briscoe wouldn’t stay down.
Jay Briscoe Digs Deep
Briscoe was on the ropes and took punches to the ribs now, Taylor trying to take his breath away. He’d make a comeback with the left jabs, went for the boot but was shoved away and almost hit with a knee strike. Instead, Briscoe got the 300lb Taylor up with a Death Valley Driver. Mark Briscoe came to cheer his brother on, and Jay went up top before being cut down.
Taylor wanted Tower City, but Briscoe got a chokehold and Taylor fought the full choke and ran Briscoe into the corner. Briscoe jumped right back on with a sleeper hold, and forced Taylor to the mat. Taylor was almost choked out, but made the ropes to break it. The J-Driller was set up, but Taylor fought it hard.
A rolling elbow and a running lariat would be followed with a neckbreaker, but Taylor kicked out at two. He’d struggle back up and hit a headbutt and a huge Package Piledriver for a two count. Welcome to the Land finally put Briscoe down after an incredible fight.
