Boxing News: Anthony Joshua Wants Heavyweight Showdown At Wembley

Anthony Joshua has admitted that he would love to face Tyson Fury for the undisputed heavyweight title at Wembley this year. That announcement would be music to the ears of the millions of British boxing fans that have been hoping that the fight would take place in England.

There will be more interest in the UK than elsewhere due to the fight being between two of the biggest British boxing names in the history of the sport, and some believe that it would be fitting for the fight to take place at what has been considered as the stadium for the biggest boxing events in the UK.

    Boxing News: Joshua Admits Preference

Joshua’s wish would be to fight at Wembley, where he has already fought on two previous occasions. The biggest win of his career came at the iconic stadium, as he knocked out Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley. That is still regarded as the moment Joshua firmly arrived on the boxing scene, as he was able to see off his biggest threat to his IBF title.

In winning the fight, Joshua also picked up the IBO and WBA (Super) titles, which he held up until losing them to Andy Ruiz Jr on his American debut. Joshua eventually ended up winning the titles back from Ruiz later in the year, and has since successfully defended them against Kubrat Pulev. However, any hope that Joshua has of facing Fury at Wembley could depend on factors outside of his control.

Boxing News: COVID Could Have Impact

Joshua’s last fight was forced to take place at the SSE Arena due to the restrictions in place. Those same restrictions could have an impact on where the Joshua/Fury bout could take place admitted the current heavyweight champion.

If the current restrictions aren’t lifted then the Olympic gold medallist revealed that the unification fight may have to happen elsewhere. Eddie Hearn echoed the same sentiment, as he said that a fight on British soil will require all restrictions to be lifted so maximum attendance figures can be achieved.

Any chance of that happening in the short term have been effectively ended by Boris Johnson this week, as the United Kingdom went back into a national lockdown. It was also revealed over the weekend that all British boxing bouts this month had been cancelled. Another muted location for the huge showdown is Saudi Arabia, with Joshua’s rematch against Ruiz Jr taking place there.
