Last night on Smackdown Live, fans saw Shinsuke Nakamura have his best night in years. After months of hanging out in the undercard, losing to men like Otis in under three minutes and having tag team matches with Cesaro? The King of Strong Style came back. In the gauntlet match to name a number one contender for WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, Nakamura let himself loose.
Maybe he was inspired after watching his old rival Kota Ibushi become god at Wrestle Kingdom 15, or someone help his surfboard hostage, but this was the Nakamura of old. He came up short after interference from Roman Reigns & Jey Uso handed the match to Adam Pearce instead. This seems to be a set-up for his road to Wrestlemania.
You’re Only As Good As Your Last Match
This sudden resurgence of Nakamura had some scratching their heads, but you just need to remember how WWE tends to look at these situations. You’re only as good as your last match. Look at Jinder Mahal as a perfect example of this. He went from the lowest of lows, barely getting by on Main Event, and then next thing he knew he was in the main event of Backlash and holding the WWE Championship high.
For an even better comparison, take Drew McIntyre, the current WWE Champion. In 2019, he was a solid upper-midcard act, but once 2020 came? Suddenly McIntyre was the one who was able to eliminate Brock Lesnar from the Royal Rumble, then slay the beast at Wrestlemania. This is a situation we might be seeing again, this time with Nakamura.
People Have Wanted Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Roman Reigns Since 2018
Speaking of Royal Rumble, back in 2018 the match came down to Shinsuke Nakamura & Roman Reigns. This is currently the closest we’ve gotten to a singles match between these two, and it was one of the best final stretches in recent memory. The chemistry was instant, and Reigns is someone who Nakamura can lay those strikes into.
So you take these incredible performers, add in Roman Reigns being one of the best heels in the company? Then you have people starved for Nakamura to go back being the man we fell in love with in NJPW? This is a recipe for potentially one of the best Wrestlemania main events in years, and might even be more compelling than Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns.
