There was massive fight action on Saturday night, as Canelo Alvarez set up a massive unification fight for later in the year against Billy Joe Saunders. In truth, it looks incredibly unlikely that Canelo was ever going to be really tested in the contest on Saturday, and that proved to be the case.
The Mexican pound-for-pound great didn’t need to get out of second gear to beat his Turkish opponent, as he finished Avni Yildirim in the third round of their contest at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. However, bigger things are certainly set for the Mexican for later in the year.
Boxing News: Alvarez Targeting History
The win was just the first step of Canelo’s plan, as he revealed afterwards that he was targeting history. Shortly after the stoppage win, the fight against Billy Joe Saunders was announced on social media by promoter Eddie Hearn. The fight will take place on the 8th May, but there has not yet been a venue announced for the fight. It is massively likely that the fight will once again take place in an open-air stadium in the United States, like the last two fights Alvarez has been involved in.
Saunders is the current WBO title holder, while Canelo holds the WBA titles. The unification fight was always on the agenda before the fight against Yildirim, and the announcement wasn’t a completely shocking announcement.
Boxing News: Canelo’s Plan Revealed
There is very little that Canelo hasn’t achieved throughout his prestigious career, but he outlined a huge plan for the future after beating Yildirim on Saturday night. He claimed that he wants to make boxing history and become the first unified champion at 168 pounds. In order to do that, he will need to see off Saunders at the beginning of May, and then a massive fight in the history of boxing can be made for later in the year between Alvarez and IBF holder Caleb Plant.
That occasion will be huge in boxing, as it will be the first time at there will be a unified champion in the super-middleweight division. Plant has a perfect record at present, as he has won all 21 fights that he has fought. The most recent fight that he has had came at the end of January, as he beat Caleb Traux by unanimous decision in Los Angeles. It certainly could be a history-making year for the trailblazing Mexican, as he looks to solidify his legacy as the pound-for-pound best.
