To say that the heavyweight division is stacked at the minute would be a massive understatement, as there has never been quite the battling for title positions as there has been in the past couple of years. With every passing month there seems to be a new name that emerges on the scene, and claim that they should be next in line for an opportunity.
Last weekend it was the turn of Otto Wallin, who produced an excellent performance to overcome Dominic Breazeale. The Swedish fighter has only lost once during his career, with that defeat coming against Tyson Fury. However, last weekend’s win has put him back into a strong position of a rematch against the Gypsy King.
Boxing News: New Challenger Could Emerge This Weekend
However, the Swedish heavyweight may not be the only fighter with the gold on his mind, as Chinese superstar Zhilei Zhang returns to the ring this weekend, and had planned to put his card down for a future title opportunity. The 37-year-old looks like one of the most daunting fighters in the heavyweight division, as he stands at 6 ft 6 in, and has already achieved success as an amateur by winning two gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals.
So far, his professional career has gone the way that many would have expected, and he could be set to put a marker down this weekend on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez fight taking place on Saturday night.
Boxing News: Zhilei Has Been Untested So Far
It has been an excellent start to his professional career for the Chinese heavyweight, as he has breezed through every test that has been put in front of him to date. He currently has a 22-0 perfect record, and has won 17 of his fights by way of knockout. His most recent knockout success came in November as he floored Devin Vargas in the fourth round of their contest in Florida. His only recent win by decision came in 2019, as Andriy Rudenko became the first fighters in three years to take the Chinese heavyweight the distance.
Zhilei Zhang will come up against another talented opponent this weekend in the form of Jerry Forrest. A win against the American in Miami would seriously show his credentials, and a step up in competition could soon follow for the Chinese fighter before the end of the year.
