Finn Balor has some issues to settle with Adam Cole, and he knows there is only one way to get him to the ring to deal with them. Cole is blinded by greed, and needs what he still views as his NXT Championship back. Balor knows this, and so he was ready to put the NXT Championship up for grabs tonight. Can Cole join the elite class of two time NXT Champions?
Finn Balor & Adam Cole Are The Greatest Champions In NXT History
Cole came to the ring in the same gear he wore when he won the NXT Championship back in 2019. He’s 13-5-1 in NXT Champion matches, while Balor is 9-3-1. They’re the two greatest champions in the belts history, and tonight they meet for their third singles match, and their record is 1-1.
They’d waste no time getting started, Balor hitting a shoulder tackle before being taken to the mat with a headlock takeover, but shifted control and got Cole in one instead. Cole fought back to his feet, but struggled to break the hold. He’d manage to get free, and apply a headlock, with extra focus on the recently injured jaw of Balor. Balor would break free, and this one was a stalemate.
He’d trade wrist control with Cole, who also looked to attack the hand of Balor which was attacked heavily by Pete Dunne. Balor would have his arm bent around the ropes, before being stomped down into the corner and choked with the boot of Cole. Cole has done his homework, and knows exactly where the cracks in Balor’s armor is.
An NXT Takeover Level Main Event
Balor came back with a dropkick, before applying a modified sleeper hold to Cole, but lost control when trying to move to a wrist lock. Cole took Balor to the outside, and threw him into the barricade. Back in the ring, Balor hit another low dropkick, before a hard chop to the throat and kick to the back of the leg. Balor dropped Cole with a leg trip and nailed a double stomp, before taking an enziguri.
Cole wanted to follow up the enziguri with an Ushigoroshi, but instead Balor slipped behind him for a Final Cut. Balor stomped Cole, who slipped to the outside, only to trip Balor up and hit a pump kick through the ropes. Cole would set up something with the steel steps, before getting suplexed onto the stage by Balor.
Back in the ring, Balor would hit a back suplex for a two count, before applying a sharpshooter and forcing Cole to crawl to the ropes to break the hold. They’d trade blows in the middle of the ring, Cole nailing the pump kick before Balor hit the Pele Kick. Balor wanted 1916, but Cole countered into the knee drop brainbuster for a two count.
Adam Cole Looks Like He’s Seen A Ghost
Cole set up Panama Sunrise, but Balor dodged and hit the slingblade. Shotgun dropkick sent Cole into the corner, and down to the mat. Balor missed the Coup De Grace, and Cole nailed a superkick to the jaw of Balor! Cole applied a crossface, and as soon as Balor got close to the ropes, Cole rolled back to the middle.
Balor was able to break free and look for his Abdominal Stretch, but couldn’t get the full application. Cole went back to the Crossface, but Balor got the ropes. Balor tripped Cole up and hit some clubbing blows before hitting a lariat. Cole again countered 1916, before setting up and hitting Last Shot for a nail biting near fall!
He’d set up Panama Sunrise, nailing Balor who still managed to kick out! Cole was wondering what he had left, and he’d look for another Last Shot, before Balor sent Cole over the top rope to take a breather. On the outside, Cole would see a ghost in Kyle O’Reilly, before Balor dove onto him. Balor looked at O’Reilly before nailing 1916 on the floor. He’d sent Cole back into the ring, and hit Coup De Grace to win.
While this one started off slow, it told a great story from start to finish. Cole had the recent injuries of Balor scouted, and used them to his advantage wonderfully. The pace picked up huge in the end, delivering a Takeover worthy finish to the match. Match Rating: 4.25/5 (**** 1/4)
After the bell, O’Reilly came into the ring, blocked a low blow attempt from Cole and took the Undisputed Era armband off him before beating him down. Cole got a cheap shot, but O’Reilly was unhinged.
He’d shove the referee away, before throwing Cole into the barricades. Cole tried to end him with a suplex onto the steel steps, and referees stopped O’Reilly from doing the same to cole. Karrion Kross had joined Balor in the ring to watch this fight, and Balor simply asked him ‘What took you so long?”
