Last night on Smackdown Live, Roman Reigns made a declaration as the Head of The Table. He is sick of dealing with Daniel Bryan, who’s been a thorn in his side all the way from Elimination Chamber until now. Three time’s he’s been able to beat Bryan, each time with some serious help, but even still, the record books are what he cares about.
Now, they will meet next week on Smackdown Live once again for the WWE Universal Championship. If Bryan wins, he gets to call himself champion again. But if he loses, he’s done. No more Smackdown for Daniel Bryan. But could this go deeper than just that? Are we about to see the end of his WWE career?
A Way To Write Daniel Bryan Off TV Before His Contract Ends
Right now, Daniel Bryan has went on record in interviews saying that he has felt burnt out in his current WWE run. Even being in the main event of Wrestlemania 37 didn’t do much for him, that passion for wrestling starting to weaken. With his WWE contract coming to an end soon, this match might be WWE’s way of sending him off with a big match. Losing to Roman Reigns who is at the peak of his game is far from a bad thing, especially if it’s done clean this time.
The stipulation particularly said that he’s off Smackdown if he loses, which does leave the door open for him to go to Monday Night RAW or even NXT, but it’s possible this match could be it for Bryan in WWE.
There is an outside chance that he wins and drops the belt to Cesaro, acting as a transitional champion before his contract ends. What gives this merit is that he did make Reigns tap out twice in matches, but neither submission was recognized. Still, WWE showed that he can do it, which gives a glimmer of hope.
Wanting To Wrestle As Long As Jerry Lawler & Terry Funk
However, if the WWE run of Daniel Bryan is coming to an end, and his gear is being shipped home in an eco-friendly garbage bag, fans need not worry about a full retirement from Bryan. He’s got lofty plans for when he’s done being a full time wrestler.
“I never even envisioned the idea of retiring. Like, I want to wrestle until I’m old, and when I say old, I mean really old. I love wrestling. Like, sometimes I’m inspired by, I don’t wanna say sometimes, a lot of times I’m inspired by people like Jerry Lawler and Terry Funk and even some like European wrestlers like Johnny Saint who will still go out there and wrestle say in their sixties, maybe even seventies. Not because they need the money or not because of this or that. They do it because they love doing it, right?”
While that quote isn’t from yesterday, Bryan has expressed continued interest in wrestling around the world. He wants to work NJPW, CMLL and more. But with a WWE contract he can’t do that, so it might be time for WWE fans to say goodbye.
