Demi Lovato has revealed the struggles that she went through before she decided to tell her fans that she was non-binary.

The singer’s personal problems have been well-publicised. Demi had tragically been taken to hospital in 2018 following a drugs overdose that led her to receive emergency medical care. While that has still left her with some long-lasting consequences, namely brain damage/eating disorder, it seems she was going through an identity crisis.
And she laid this at the hands of conformity that people feel pressured into abiding by. During an interview on the Fire Drill Fridays show, Demi said: “After years of living my life for other people, trying to make myself smaller for the patriarchy, they run the industry, they are at the centre of everything.”
This was visible when Demi spoke about the pressures she was going through in the music industry. And it all came to a head when she decided to rebel by the manner of her appearance. Her hair colour and dress sense become more evocative in an attempt to fight back at what she deemed to be constraints on her identity.
That is when she decided to break the mould. She added: “When I realized that, I thought, ‘What are the ways that the patriarchy has been holding me back?’ And for me, it was putting me in a box telling [me], ‘You are a female, this is what you’re supposed to like, this is what you’re supposed to do.”
Since that realisation, she has decided to make some drastic changes. Demi has signed up to create her own TV show entitled ‘Unidentified with Demi Lovato. She has been vocal about her belief that aliens exist and is attempting to prove their existence with this venture.
Despite the ridicule she has received in response, she has taken on a bigger role in the producing aspect in an attempt to double down on her beliefs. That is how she is moving forward with her life in general.
