Yesterday, we had reported that the WWE NXT UK Championship match between the dominant champion WALTER & challenger Ilja Dragunov was postponed. It was explained on TV by WALTER & Dragunov getting into a wild backstage brawl, with WALTER hurting his hand. While at first many believed this was a ruse to push this anticipated rematch to when it can have a crowd, the injury has now been confirmed to be legitimate.
WALTER Is Legitimately Injured
First reported today by PWInsider, this injury is not simply to push the storyline back, but legitimate. It took place during a WWE Training camp, and is not a serious injury. We will likely see WALTER back soon, but there is no way he can currently compete at his expected level.
WALTER doesn’t wrestle often for WWE, but his matches always end up delivering. This year alone, his matches with A-Kid, Tommaso Ciampa & Rampage Brown could all find their way onto the best WWE matches of the year lists. WWE will want to maintain this image, and not rush towards a match which could be his best of the year.
NXT UK Is A Smaller Brand, Can Get Away With Delaying A World Championship Match
Thankfully, WALTER is champion in NXT UK. While the show has a dedicated fanbase, it doesn’t generally get the same level of scrutiny that shows like RAW & Smackdown get from fans. NXT UK regularly swaps put the focus on their show to keep things fresh, and they can put extra attention on the Tag Team & Women’s divisions while WALTER heals.
If he was out longer, we could see NXT UK introduce an interim championship, and having WALTER looming over them and waiting to prove himself as the undisputed champion. It would be a fun storyline, but thankfully won’t be needed. We are also highly unlikely to see WWE end his nearly 900 day reign with him vacating. The current plan is reported to be simply waiting and running the WALTER vs. Dragunov match when fans return.
