Scott Coker, president of Bellator, wants the UFC’s best to take on AJ McKee, his biggest star, in a cross-promotional superfight.
Coker confidently told the assembled press that he considers AJ McKee the best featherweight in the world, and that he can stand up and fight with the best, regardless of promotion:
Bellator President challenges Dana White to cross-promotional super fight
“I would love to see [McKee] fight against other people as well, as you guys would also, but it’s not going to happen because it’s not the UFC’s business model to do it.
But you tell me this kid couldn’t go in there and fight anybody right now. Everybody knows that he can do it. So if they want to get it on, we’d do it in a second”
AJ McKee this weekend cemented his place at the pinnacle of Bellator’s rankings, with a potent victory over Patricio Pitbull at Bellator 263. After stunning Pitbull with a flurry of rapid strikes, he finished the bout with a brutal guillotine choke. He picked up both the 145lb championship and a $1 million grand prize. Not bad for an evening’s work.
McKee boasts a 18-0 record in MMA, with no defeats in the sport. Pitbull, one of the best featherweights on the planet, was no match for McKee. It’s clear that he’s a dangerous prospect at 145lbs. Scott Coker believes that McKee has what it takes to stand against the best in the world, regardless of promotion.
McKee declared that he wants to make himself the “Mayweather of MMA”, and a cross-promotional superfight would secure this. Bellator has been good to McKee, signing him as a young prospect and nurturing his growth in the sport, so it’s not likely we’ll see a Michael Chandler-style defection. However, the UFC remains the biggest name in MMA, by a significant margin. McKee’s rising star power may well change that, but, for many, the UFC is synonymous with the sport.
Crowning himself the greatest not only at 145lbs, but of all time, may require McKee to take on the likes of Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, and there’s only one promotion where that can happen.
Do you want to see a Bellator v UFC superfight? Do you think that AJ McKee can raise Bellator’s profile so it can seriously compete with the UFC, or is a defection inevitable? What other fights do you want to see on a hypothetical Bellator v UFC card? Let us know in the comments.
