Back when WWE first got back on the road, fans in attendance got a surprise return during a dark match. Davey Boy Smith Jr. was back in the ring, after helping to induct his father into the WWE Hall of Fame a few years back. Being the son of a legend makes it clear why WWE wanted to bring him back, but he hasn’t been seen yet. He is under contract, but WWE is waiting to assign him to a particular brand.
Davey Boy Smith Jr. Was Set For NXT UK – But Plans Changed
Originally the talks with WWE would have placed Smith on their NXT UK brand, where he would have been pushed as a top babyface contender against then NXT UK Champion WALTER. However the COVID-19 pandemic halted both his signing and debut, and killed those plans. Now WWE is deciding to put him on RAW or Smackdown, and he’d fit onto either brand.
Despite largely being a tag team specialist with Tyson Kidd & Natalya as The Hart Dynasty in his first run, Smith has improved hugely since leaving. Tours of Japan in the Suzuki-Gun faction and a stint in the revival of World of Sport got his name out there, and performances in Bloodsport showed just how technically sound he is. All of this combined with his family name make him a potential star for WWE now.
WWE Draft Could Put Him Into A Major Role Before Heading To Midcard
WWE will likely assign him to a brand in their coming draft. Smith Jr. is likely to come in with enough hype for a short world title program on either brand. Placing him on Smackdown Live could make him a contender for the never-ending reign of Roman Reigns, with their styles being a nice mix. Reigns works best with smaller opponents but showed with Cesaro he can work a technical heavyweight match.
After a brief time at the top, unless he is able to really capture the imaginations of fans, it’s likely he will move into the midcard title scene. Smackdown would again be perfect for him, as he had his best singles match ever with Shinsuke Nakamura back in New Japan Pro Wrestling, something WWE can run back.
